Subject: 2008 Department of Ohio Allied Orders Encampment.

Commander Grant,

On July 10, 2007, I mailed out letters to all Allied Order presidents. The letters were sent in behalf of the 2008 Department of Ohio Site Committee, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

I indicated in this letter that if any of the Allied Orders committees or members had any ideas as to where the 2008 Encampment should be held, the SUVCW Site Committee would be glad to meet with representatives of the Allied Orders.

The only communications I have received from any of the Allied Orders was on August 16, 2007 by internet from the Ohio Department Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Secretary Janice Cass. This communication indicated that the DUVCW voted at the 2007 Encampment to continue to meet with the Allied Orders only if the encampment returns back to a weekend event. She also indicated the DUVCW were approached by several members of other Allied Orders about Denison University being a possible site in 2008.

Neither the 2007 or 2008 Department of Ohio, SUVCW Site Committees have been officially informed about any contact with Denison University staff. The Allied Orders since the Encampment and my letter dated July 16, 2007 have not contacted us about meetings or contacts in regards to the 2008 Encampment.

During the 2007 Department of Ohio Encampment the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War took a vote on the desire of membership in attendance in regards to the 2008 Encampment. The majority voted for a one day Encampment.

The Department of Ohio Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Site Committee has decided that the 2008 Department of Ohio Encampment will be held for one day, Saturday June 14, 2008, at the Franklin County Veterans Memorial Building, 300 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio.

The Department of Ohio Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War invites all Allied Orders to join us for this Encampment. If your Order decides to join us, please notify me by January 1, 2008. We have set aside rooms for all Allied Orders. The SUVCW looks forward to continued fraternal relations with all Allied Orders. We must continue to preserve the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic.

UPDATE (2/4/08)

    The Planning Committee for the 2008 Encampment has just learned that our Commander-in-Chief will be attending our Encampment.

    Commander Grant and the Planning Committee have now scheduled the Commander-in-Chief as the key speaker at the 2008 Dept. of Ohio Encampment Luncheon.
