Department Order No. 1
Series 2006-2007
Brothers of the Department of Ohio;
We would like to thank all who were in attendance at our 124th Ohio GAR Allied Order Department Encampment.
We would also like to thank all of you for your confidence and support in electing us as your 124th Ohio Department Officers and Committees.
We have some big footsteps to follow in, but we are looking forward to the challenge, I believe that we will continue our great tradition and we will have another great and flourishing year especially with the superb support core of Past Department Commanders and Present and Past Commander in Chiefs.
I would like to hereby report that the Ohio Department Headquarters is now located in Willoughby, Ohio.
I would like to thank all the Brothers who have accepted the Department Officers and Appointed Positions, I look forward to serving with you all and serving the membership.
We would also like to extend my greatest appreciation and thanks to PCinC Greenwalt, his wonderful wife Bea, the Dept Encampment Committee and Chief of Staff Bob Davis for again organizing this year’s encampment.
Again we are honored to have all Five Allied Orders present at our 124th Ohio GAR Allied Order Encampment. It will be one of our goals to continue to promote this important relationship.
It will also be our objective to fully promote our core goals
- Honoring Veterans – this is to include all veterans of all wars
- Preserving and Perpetuating the GAR – this is to include the documentation of the
SUVCW at the Camp and Department Level
- Patriotic Education - Continue the education of our patriotic heritage
This includes the principals of: In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty.
1. Organization/Communication
A list of the new officers has been posted on the Department website http://www.ohiosuv.com.
All Camp Commanders and Secretaries are requested to make sure their contact information, officers and any other information is up to date.
Please note all reports, membership applications, and address changes should now
be sent to
Secretary/Treasurer Donald E. Darby.
If your camp has a newsletter please submit it to Commander/Signals Officer Ken Freshley for inclusion on the website. It will communicate to other Brothers in the Department the activities and events of your camp. For the Department newsletter, all camps and brothers are requested to submit to Commander/Signals Officer Ken Freshley articles and pictures of camp activities. Original articles on Civil War sites, battles, monuments, or your Civil War ancestor are also encouraged.
2. Camp Historians
All camps within the Department are hereby directed to appoint a Camp Historian to record the history of each camp going back as far as possible. This should include the names of all those on each charter as well as the date thereof, activities and rosters of each year of the camps existence. All of this information should be forwarded to the Department Historian, PDC Robert Wolz. This will be required by the National Organization.
Keeping the history of the Order alive for future generations is very important. We have to remember that those things we do today become the history of tomorrow. In as little as five or ten years accomplishments, events and people are too often times forgotten.
3. Camp Meetings and Events
I look forward to attending as many Camp meetings and events as my schedule will allow. Please let me know as far in advance as possible, so I can make arrangements. If I am unable to attend, I will ask one of the other Department Officers to be my representative. Please note that individuals must get approval by the Commander in order to represent the Ohio Department at an event.
4. Buffington Island Ceremony
We are pleased to announce the first
annual Department sanctioned Buffington Island event to be held July 22nd,
2006 at 1:00 PM. This event will be held in Portland Ohio hosted by the Fearing
Camp from Marietta and Cadot-Blessing Camp from Gallipolis. The general public
is invited and all members of the Allied Orders.
ALL Brothers are encouraged to attend this event so we can make into an annual
tradition the Department can be proud of.
