Department Order No. 20

Series 2007-2008

Brothers of the Department of Ohio;

All Camp Commanders please issue a camp order honoring Ohio Civil War Veteran James DeVan, Battery D,

1st Ohio Heavy Artillery.  Please send a copy to Brother Dennis Hermann.  This is to be presented to the veteran's descendants on June 14, 2008.

See email below for details

“Commander Don,

I was in contact with you in June of 2007 concerning the dedication and honoring by our Colonel Hecker

Camp #443 SUVCW, Belleville, Illinois of James DeVan, Battery D, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, with a government headstone. DeVan was also a member of the Irwin McDowell Post #507 GAR, East St. Louis, Illinois.

This is the first marker on his grave site since his death in 1923.

We had discussed the possibilities of the Department of Ohio or Camps from Ohio furnishing us a small

Ohio State flag and a certificate from your Department or Camp honoring DeVan's Civil War service for

Ohio. These will go to his descendants. We hope the Department of Ohio will look favorably on our

request and send our Camp the items.”

So ordered this 20th day of May, 2008

Yours in Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty, Attested,
Donald L. Grant Jim Crane
