Department Order No. 21

 Series 2009-2010

Brothers of the Department of Ohio;

Although the day designated for Memorial Day according to the United States government is the last
Monday in May, which this year is May 31st, let us all remember that the true date set by General Logan, in his General Order #11 issued May 6, 1868 is May 30th. Please remember to commemorate this day and work toward restoration of this date on a national basis.

I want to compliment all camps and members throughout the Department of Ohio, no matter what date
you select, for honoring the men and women of our United States Armed Forces, who have served over
the generations in preserving our Constitution and Union, even to making the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.
Many Camps are attending different dates for parades and ceremonies this Memorial Day weekend.

We are organized Brothers, for the purpose, among other things, “To perpetuate the memory of the Grand
Army of the Republic.” Let us take time out from picnics, baseball games and family reunions to lay the
choicest flowers of springtime; and to place our United States flag upon the graves of our veterans who
defended our nation throughout our national history.

I look forward to greeting you at the Department of Ohio Encampment in Columbus, Ohio, June 12, 2010.
Since this may be my final Department Order as Department Commander, I would like to thank all of you for the honor and privilege of serving you this past year. Thank you for your service to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and for the warm greetings and hospitality extended to me during my visits to camps and events throughout my term of office. In addition, I want to thank all Department Officers and Committee Members, Past Department Commanders and the entire Ohio Brotherhood for your support,
encouragement, sound advice and hard work during my administration. It has been a very productive year.
In leaving office, I wish the Department of Ohio, Camps and all members a fruitful and successful Department Encampment and year.

So ordered this 21st day of May, 2010,

Yours in Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty, Attested,
Robert W. Davis Allan W. Howey
