Department Order No. 1
Series 2011-2012
Brothers of the Department of Ohio;
To all of the Brothers that attended the 129th Department Encampment I wish to thank you for your support and confidence over the years and for the honor you have bestowed upon me by electing me your Commander.
The Headquarters for the Department is transferred to 6025 State Route 772, Chillicothe, OH, 45601. Electronic communications: [email protected] and phone (740) 663-4961.
I would like to thank the Brothers Jonathan Davis, Henry Shaw Jr, Andrew Rose, Robert Davis, PDC of the Encampment Committee for an outstanding 2012 Department Encampment. Also a special thanks to Sandy Prosak and Judy Hritsko of the ASUVCW for yet again another wonderful breakfast.
My congratulations go out to the newly elected Department Presidents of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Nancy Greenwalt Hilton; the Woman’s Relief Corp Ruth Ann Bauman, the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic Carolyn Lewis; and the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War Mary Ellen Staver. I wish all of them a productive year and look forward to working with together in perpetuating the memory of our noble ancestors.
We continue to face the challenge of the many projects before us. I urge all to work hard to get closer to completion of the Last Veteran Project and Grave Registrations Projects while not forgetting our other programs.
Camps need to ensure that they are in compliance with report due dates and that they are filed correctly and in duplicate. You may see your reports rejected if not on time and correct. It is the job of the Department Secretary to compile these, not fill them out for the Camp or twist arms to get them completed. The majority of camps reported accurately and on time. On the other hand, many camp reports contain various mistakes.
Reports must be in DUPLICATE
Rosters must be on REQUIRED FORM
UPDATE rosters from NATIONAL Membership Database to ensure they are accurate
Numbers must add up. ROSTERS must MATCH REPORTS.
Use UPDATED FORMS only
Submit the CORRECT per capita dues.
NO LATE REPORTS.
Please contact Secretary/Treasurer Allan W. Howey, PDC with any questions. [email protected], 6440 Shelterglen Court, Miami Township, OH 45459, (937) 435-2072,
Every Camp must fill the Patriotic Instructor position. The Camp Patriotic Instructor should present small programs of educational, historic or patriotic instruction at each meeting. The annual Camp Patriotic Instructor Report must be filled out and turned in to the Department Patriotic Instructor by 1 February of each year. Our Patriotic Instructor provides monthly information that may be used. He can be reached at: Shawn Cox [email protected], 652 Comfort Lane Washington Court House, OH, 43160, (740)333-4615.
Publicity of Camp and Department events is essential, not for vain or selfish reasons, but because by doing so we recognize those who have served our Nation and new ideas are shared with our Brothers. The Patriotic Instructor Report, Banner Articles, the Department Newsletter and press coverage are all part of an event and need accomplished as well. Department Newsletter Editor: SVC Fred Lynch, [email protected], 5041 Strathaven Dr, Dayton, OH, 45424, (937)235-6967. Banner Editor, Stephen A. Michaels, PCinC, [email protected] .
I ask that all Brothers remember and consider the Principles our Order is founded upon, Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty. We know them but do we always remember them when dealing with each other? I challenge each of us to think of what these mean and how they apply to our relationships with our Brothers. Commanders remember that you are leaders and councilors, not dictators.
Brothers, please remember and try to attend the 130th National Encampment of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, August 11 - 14, 2011 in Reston, Virginia. http://www.suvcw.org/encampment/2011/Virginia2011.htm
The following additional appointments have been made:
Camp Chase Representative- Robert Davis
Ohio Civil War 150 Committee Representative- Fred Lynch
Department Storage Committee- Fred Lynch, Jonathan Davis, Jon Silvis, & Brad Tilton
All Camps please contact me with dates of events, Camp Installation dates and locations as soon as possible so I can mark my calendar.
In all things, ask the question, “What does this do for the good of our Order?”
